President's Message:

Gleaning website www.glumbert.com yielded the following mind-boggling information and predictions:

In China 25% highest-IQ kids exceeds the total kid population in N. America. In India it is the top 28%. They have more honor students than we have kids.

China is the #1 English-speaking country in the world.

If every U. S. job was shipped to China they would still have a labor surplus.

Todays leaner will have 10-14 jobs by age 38, that 1 in 4 job holder has been employed only 1 year, that 1 in 2 in 5 years.

The top 10 jobs of 2010 do not exist in '04. Currently we are preparing students for jobs that do not now exist and using technology that does not now exist to solve problems that they do not yet know.

The U. S. is 20th in the use of broad-band connections.

Nintendo spent 140 million for R & D in 2002, the U.S. Government spent less than one half on research and innovation in education.

One of eight married couples met on the Internet and 106 million users of My Space would populate the 11th largest nation in the world. The average My Space site has 30 hits a day. There are 2.7-billion Google searches each month, which exceeds the population of the planet.

Each day 3000 new books are published. A week of the New-York Times contains more information than came across one lifetime in the 18th century. There are 1.5 exabytes (1.5 × 1018) of new information in the world this year. Technological information doubles every 2 years which is more than in the previous 5000 years.

Students in a 4-year college or technical program will find that by the 3rd year of their education one half of what they have learned will be outdated.

Technical knowledge will double every 2 years and by 2010 will double every 72 hours.

One third of the new fiber optics have been tested and can transmit 10-trillion bits per second which would equal 1,900 CD's, 190-million simultaneous phone phone calls every second. It is currently doubling every six months and expected to continue for 20 years. The fiber is available and all that needs to be done is the proper switches on each end—fiber cost is $0.00.

Forty-seven-million laptops have been shipped world-wide—e-paper is cheaper than real paper. Fifty- to one-hundred-million $100 laptops are shipped world-wide to undeveloped countries.

It is predicted that by 2013 a super-computer will have the capacity of the human brain and that by 2023 a $1,000 computer will exceed the capacity of the human brain and that by 2049 a $1,000 computer will have the computation capacity of the human race.

And you thought Vista was a difficult operating system to master with all the glitches and incompatibilities. How are my HP Pavilion 7960 P4 512 Ram and 2-40G hard drives and I going to survive for the next 5 minutes in such a rush into the future? I guess I'll try it month by month, week by week, and even day by day before I fall off the tech cliff with my trusty HP.

See all you at the Toledo PCUG meeting where I'll be presenting the program On-line trading in the Equities Market.

As always: Visitors are welcome.
Members are expected.

Your Prez., Floyd L. Miller

Minutes

The meeting was called to order at 19:38 by F. Miller, president.

The minutes were accepted.

The club s balance is $1019.14 after 2 renewals. The treasurer s report was accepted, subject to audit.

Roy Ballogg said that there are 15 members with Ann Summers, and Nina Sherman; the latter s one-year membership expires in July. Eleven were present. (Noöne has news of Ann, and Nina has no word for the club.)

Lester Miller said that for May he plans a talk on investments and investing, and, for June, TV through the computer.

There was no old bizness

New bizness:
Roy Ballogg said that it is time for thinking of the July roster.

J. Mack asked whether anyone with Yahoo e-mail also had a sudden, new rush of bulk e-mail. Lavern Curtis answered that she has such, but no change in bulk e-mail, although her Hotmail account is full of it.

At 19:53 the meeting was adjourned; afterwards L. Miller showed XP-registry–cleaning software that he had gotten.

Respectfully submitted by Sándor Halász, secretary
