People are already lining up outside of two New York Apple stores to buy the new iPhone—four days in advance of its release. Apple will launch its much-anticipated iPhone on June 29 at 6 p.m., across all time zones. Apple plans to sell 10 million phones in 2008, capturing 1% of the market.
The Allure of the Apple iPhoneby Ann Sosnowski, Editor-in-Chief, Diligent InvestorI admit I enjoy ogling new technology: MP3 players, cameras and cellphones laid out in storefront windows, beaming in fluorescent lights, displayed like lollipops in a grownups’ candy store.
I also admit to certain neo-Luddite sensibilities: Shouldn't we all worry more about how to survive on as little as possible instead of making agonizing decisions over which pink iPod cover matches my new Coach bag?
Considering its price tag of $499 per unit … doesn’t keep me from really, really wanting one, even though I probably wouldn’t know what to do with it. And it doesn’t keep me from ogling its curves and assets every time the commercial for Apple’s next blockbuster product comes on the television.
Apple’s iPhone will start selling on June 29. People are already lining up outside of stores for first dibs on the most anticipated “toy” of the year. Although the phones themselves will be expensive ($499 for a 4 GB model and $599 for an 8-GB model), the phone plans courtesy of AT&T Inc. aren’t much more than what you pay for your current phone service. For $59.99, you can have unlimited data service, 200 text messages, rollover minutes, unlimited mobile-to-mobile calling, as well as the first visual voicemail service.
The prediction is that there will be 10 million iPhones in consumers’ hands by 2008. The reason people buy cars these days is the dazzle: The satellite radio systems and GPS. Forget about horsepower and torque and the smooth ride. The iPhone is very similar: No matter how it “drives”, the bells and whistles, including “real” Internet, will rope in plenty of customers.
While there are times to be ideological, the bottom line is that people want, even yearn, for Apple’s newest product.
We are a PC-Users-Group with the traditional emphasis of the possession
and use of Personal Computers, but that restrictive use has long since
been breached. All kinds of peripherals have been connected to The
Box
, The Processor
that it would take several lines to list them all.
It has become a programming tool for many more devices. When there was
once all those simple DOS commands (or not so simple) now the use of
the computer has extended in all kinds of directions with all kinds of
programs and operating systems (both expensive & freeware and open-source).
Someone has said that an educated person is one that does not know all
the answers, but knows where the answers may be found. Some of those
answers are found in the monthly meetings of the Toledo PC-Users-Group
and the Internet Sig Group where two heads or many heads together are
better than one especially when that one head is mine.
See you Monday evening for sure!!
Respectfully submitted: Floyd L Miller, Your Prez
The June meeting was called to order at 7:33 PM on 6-4-07 by Floyd Miller, President, at the UAW Hall.
The minutes of the previous meeting were accepted as published in the newsletter.
Steve Tryc reported a treasury balance of $1,094.14. This was accepted.
Roy Ballogg stated that we have 14 members including Nina Sherman whose membership expires in July and Ann Summers. There were 11 members present. There was one visitor, Dena Zolciak, an installer for AT&T.
Lester Miller reported that the current program would be on HDTV and the July program would be a class on Microsoft Word. Wi-Fi in Toledo was mentioned as a possible future topic for a presentation.
In response to questions there was a short discussion of DSL capabilities and other AT&T products by Dena.
There was no old business.
Under new business Steve Tryc reiterated his concern about the dwindling treasury. He stated there is a payment of $150 due in the first part of August for the club liability policy. President Miller asked Steve to read the policy and make a recommendation whether to renew. Meeting-hall rental, post-office–box rental at $40 per year, internet service, and the club domain name are other club expenses.
President Miller brought up the subject of officers for the next year. Since there was no response to his call for volunteers willing to serve, he stated there would probably be a recycling of officers as was done the previous year. Final determination is to be made at the July meeting.
The meeting was adjourned at 8:02 PM.
Rick Snyder then gave a presentation on receiving over-the-air HDTV on a PC.
Respectfully submitted by Rick Snyder filling in for the club secretary who arrived late.
