Cell Phones to be ‘Googled’
Jim Meyers, NewsMax.com
Thursday, Aug. 2, 2007Google is seeking further inroads into the cellphone market by wooing wireless operators to offer cellphones customized to carry offerings, including its search engine and its new mobile webbrowser.
The company has already developed prototypes of cellphones to carry its products, and approached wireless operators including T-Mobile USA and Verizon Wireless, the Wall Street Journal reported. Its aim is to capture a large portion of the burgeoning market for ads on cellphones.
As NewsMax recently reported, Google plans to take part in the January auction of $15 billion worth of public airwaves being abandoned by television stations as they convert to digital broadcast.
With the purchase of part of the wireless spectrum, Google could eventually become a phone operator itself, although that could take years to accomplish. Of more immediate concern is the company's effort to forge deals with wireless operators to carry its existing products—and its ads.
We are partnering with almost all of the carriers and manufacturers to get Google search and other Google applications onto their devices and networks, a Google spokesman told the Journal.Worldwide spending on mobile-phone advertising totaled $1.4 billion last year, but that figure is expected to grow to nearly $14 billion by 2011, according to the market-research company eMarketer.
The Google-ready cellphone envisioned by the company would include cameras for photos and video, Wi-Fi capability for wireless access to the Internet, and Global-Positioning-System technology.
As the song Sixteen Tons intoned I owe my soul to the company
store
. It would appear that the possibility of computer users as well
as cell-phone users will Owe our souls to Google
. On the other hand
perhaps the positive aspects that Google brings will far outwiegh all the
negatives. It appears we will have a few years to get up to speed on
all the new technologies that will make their appearance.
So it is that we come together in the Toledo PCUG meeting to share
where we are along the computer road -- new operating systems, new
programs, problems, helpful discoveries. Though we might be dumb
and dumber
even the dumb can perhaps help the dumber.
Hope to see you all on the 6th @ 7:30.
As always: Visitors are welcome, Members are expected.
Respectfully submitted, Floyd L. Miller, Your Prez
The meeting was called to order at 19:45 by F. Miller, pres.
The minutes were accepted.
The treasurer, S. Tryc, reported the balance $1119.14. The treasurer s report was accepted, subject to audit.
Roy Ballogg was not present, but nine members were.
Old bizness:
A summary of the club s insolvency was requested of S. Tryc. He answered that the liability-insurance premium, $150, is due, and the hall-rent, also $150. L. Miller moved, Curtis seconded, and it was passed, that the insurance be canceled.
It was moved, seconded, and passed, that the same set of officers be kept for the coming year.
New bizness:
R. Snyder asked about the email-list s administrators, Jim Bell and Greg Buerk, are of TBBS but are not members. He further suggested that a member, S. Halász, already online-newsletter–editor, also be administrator. (For this action by TBBS is needful.) R. Snyder moved, L. Miller seconded, and it was passed, that to S. Halász means be given to do all needful for maintaining all that involves the club at TBBS.
The meeting was adjourned at 20:15.
L. Miller played the CD Word 2003 Level 2.
Respectfully submitted by Sándor Halász, secretary
