On the club s website s host, named TBBS.NET or TolTBBS.COM, there is an e-mail list for the club, named tpcug. It is meant for the club, but anyone can join it. Any message sent tpcug is forwarded to all e-mail addresses on it, that is, the e-mail addresses of all those who joined it.
Why send such a message? For
sending out meeting reminders,
advising of newsletter updates, requesting help with a computer
problem, notifying of a local computer show or swap meet
, or
great hardware/software bargains, etc.
For joining or for leaving one sends e-mail to tpcug-request, either in a short form, with the one request in the subject-line and nothing in the body, or in a long form, with nothing in the subject-line and request in the body. The list handler always sends an answer, success or failure, to messages sent to tpcug-request.
For joining one uses either of the words join
or subscribe
.
In the short form that word alone is in the subject line; in the
long form the word is the first word in the message body, on the same
line followed by the list name tpcug
, and one s e-mail address:
JOIN tpcug email@addr.ess.
For leaving one uses the same form but one of the words
leave
or unsubscribe
instead.
The following requests work only in the body.
In answer to the request help
the usual acknowledgement
and a short list of synonyms for joining or leaving, and full
instructions for joining, are sent. There is also
on-line help on
the host.
There is a request stop
, after which nothing more is interpreted.
It is useful against signatures and such.
If one cannot keep signatures out of e-mail then it is best to use
the long form for joining or leaving, with stop
after the request.
